In the 1920’s, Detroit News owner George Booth commissioned Korbel to execute three life size sculptures for his Cranbrook estate in Michigan, now recognized as the Cranbrook Art Museum. Korbel’s first piece was titled Dawn representing a young girl not yet “conscious of the morning of her life”. Adolescence is a version of Dawn that varies in details in the drapery and the stylization in the hair. It is an iconic image for Korbel and for American sculpture of the 1920’s.
