The Piper is a classic theme that was a favorite among American and European marble carvers. It was a favorite theme as it incorporated both the element of music and the gentleness of youth together in a harmonious and appealing metaphor. The work achieved success as it was ordered seven times in the Ives records by various patrons. It was conceived after 1851 when he moved permanently to Rome. This work is indicative of the type of idealized subject Ives is known for and tended toward although he certainly did his share of busts and portraits throughout his career Ives also did a work of larger scale title Shepherd with a Kid carved in 1859 which depicts a slightly older boy with a goat.
