Frederick Arthur Bridgman has been regarded as one of the most influential and praised American Orientalist painters. Typical of this style, Small Entrance to the Mosque de las Pecherie, Algiers depicts a North African mosque whose architecture varies slightly from typical Islamic places of worship. In 1872 Bridgman began to travel to Spain and North Africa, focusing on Orientalist and archaeological subjects in places such as Tangiers and Algeria.A visit to Algeria with Charles Sprague Pearce brought about portrayals of Islamic monuments, street life and a journey up the Nile.
