During and a little bit after Camille-Félix Bellanger’s education at l’École des Beaux Arts in Paris around the 1870’s, he invested a lot of time and thought into religious iconography and Greek mythological paintings. The painting Oedipe et Antigone was created as an inspiration from myths and religion. It is based on a trilogy of plays written by Sophocles in 401 B.C. titled Oedipus at Colonus that deal with the life, death, and aftermath of Oedipus Rex, the king of Thebes, Greece.
