Femme Assise au Luth was done during Zadkines most powerful and successful period of the mid – twenties. He had gone through a “cubist” period and while these works still read as cubist in form, he felt he had moved past pure cubism into work that was “truly his own”. And of all the work in his career Femme Assise au Luth conveys a sense of contentment, solidity, sureness of expression and cleanness of vision. The forms within the work are rhythmical, balanced and expressive.
