Noyes was a successful American Impressionist who lived primarily in the Boston area but painted extensively in the Cape Ann area and abroad in France, Italy, Spain and Mexico. Early Spring, Roxbury is a great example of American Impressionist technique during its earliest years of experimentation. Noyes was freshly settled at 110 Tremont Street in the Old Studio Building after years abroad painting with artists like Charles Prendergast and Herman D. Murphy. For this composition he would have been inspired by the recently built Mission Church situated three miles west of downtown Boston on Tremont Street. The stone for the church would have come from a nearby quarry possibly on the roads newly cut in as we see in the foreground.
