Exhibited: Art Club of Philadelphia Provenance: Private collection, Connecticut. Gifted to father by the artist and descended through family. F. (Francis) Luis Mora was a highly awarded artist whose artistic mission was to convey the elements of Spanish mastery into his American modern painting. In particular, Mora adored the works of Diego Velazquez, the 17th Century Spanish master. Like Velasquez, Mora was interested in the character of the individual he was painting and he had a deep compassion for all his subjects. Mora was a family man and often used his family as models. He depicted his daughter, Rosemary consistently in his paintings and painted her portraits from her birth in 1918 until his death in 1940. Rosemary is the young girl depicted in Morning News when she was between the ages of 10 and 12. Therefore, "Morning News" was painted circa 1928 to 1930. Mora is also well-known for his murals and large scale oils and he produced many life-size paintings. Morning News is a life size portrait of Rosemary.
